Do NOT: The Name Game

Mispronouncing someone’s name wrong the first time is okay. But learning it and getting it right every after time after that is “the most basic form of respect,” right? According to “The Huffington Post,” the most impactful place this can happen is in the workplace. After all, we owe the common courtesy to our colleagues to pronounce their names correctly. “The Huffington Post” listed these mistakes as the most common ones to avoid in a work setting when you don’t know how to pronounce someone’s name.

  • Don’t start by saying you’re going “butcher their name.” There are ways to let people know you need help pronouncing their name, but saying you’re going to “butcher” it, isn’t the way to go.
  • Don’t avoid saying it altogether. You can’t just give up and avoid it because you struggle with it. Don’t settle for an “I’m sorry I can just never get your name right.” Names aren’t mistakes. Hold yourself accountable to do better next time.
  • Don’t use a nickname without their permission. You shouldn’t change their name just to make it easier on yourself because well.. that’s not their name! They get to decide when it’s appropriate for you to call them something else.
  • Don’t keep repeating their name back to them. Sometimes you may actually have to practice someone’s name but don’t do it in front of them. It further serves as a reminder you think of their name as “foreign or unfamiliar.”
