Equinox, SoulCycle Facing Backlash Over Owner's Plan To Host Trump Event

Equinox and SoulCycle are in hot water after word has spread that the brand's chairman has decided to host a fundraiser for President Trump in the Hamptons.

As per The Washington Post, Stephen Ross, a real-estate developer and investor, is planning to host a fundraiser for Trump's reelection on Friday (August 9) in his New York home in the Hampton. To be exact, Ross is the founder and chairman of the real-state company, Related Companies, which is the force behind Hudson Yards, Equinox Fitness Clubs, Equinox Hotels and SoulCycle. Ross is also the owner of the Miami Dolphins. POTUS is scheduled to attend the event.

While many customers have taken the steps to quit their membership, Equinox and SoulCycle released a statement, admitting that the brands have nothing to do with the event. "Neither Equinox nor SoulCycle have anything to do with the event later this week and do not support it. As is consistent with our policies, no company profits are used to fund politicians," said a statement from the brands’ public relations firm, Derris. "We believe in tolerance and equality, and will always stay true to those values. Mr. Ross is a passive investor and is not involved in the management of either business."

Meanwhile, SoulCycle CEO Melanie Whelan made her own statement on the controversy via Instagram. "SoulCycle in no way endorses the political fundraising event being held later this week," Whelan wrote on the social media platform, adding that, "Mr. Ross is a passive investor and is not involved in the management of SoulCycle."

Both brands have been allies to the LGBTQ community, with Equinox partnering with the House Ballroom community and SoulCycle hosting Pride Rides.
