Eminem Marks 11 Years Sober With Inspiring Instagram Post

2018 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival - Day 3

Eminem hit a major milestone on his sobriety journey this weekend.

The "Rap God" rapper celebrated his 11th year sober on Instagram Saturday (April 21) with an inspiring post. "11 years - still not afraid," the star wrote alongside a photo of him showing off his sobriety coin. The token is often given to either Alcoholics Anonymous or other 12-step program members to signify how long the individual has remained sober.

The meaningful moment comes more than 12 years since the 46-year-old nearly lost his life after he was hospitalized for a methadone overdose in December 2007. In June 2010, the artist released his seventh studio album, Recovery, which was heavily influenced by the near-death experience.

When asked about the album's significance and what he hoped to recover from in a 2010 interview with The New York Times, Eminem replied: "Vicodin, Valium and Ambien, and toward the end, which caused my overdose, methadone. I didn’t know it was methadone. I used to get pills wherever I could. I was just taking anything that anybody was giving to me."

The year following his overdose, Eminem went into drug rehabilitation due to his dependency on sleep medication. There, the "Not Afraid" star developed a cardio routine which allowed him to replace addiction with exercise. "Unless I was blitzed out of my mind, I had trouble sleeping. So I started running," he told Men's Health in 2015. "It gave me a natural endorphin high, but it also helped me sleep, so it was perfect."

"It’s easy to understand how people replace addiction with exercise," he added. "One addiction for another, but one that's good for them."
