South Salt Lake Votes to Limit the Size of Mulch Piles

Posted July 17th, 2014 @ 11:34am by Talk Radio 105.7 FM / 570 AM

SOUTH SALT LAKE CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS ARE LIMITING THE SIZE OF COMPOST PILES, AFTER ONE BUSINESSES' MASSIVE MULCH HEAP SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTED, TWICE IN A WEEK.

THE COUNCIL VOTED UNANIMOUSLY, LAST NIGHT, FOR THE NEW RULES, WHICH CAP THE PILES AT 20 FEET HIGH, 150 FEET WIDE AND 170 FEET LONG.

THE HEAPS MUST ALSO BE AT LEAST 76 FEET FROM A PROPERTY LINE.

THE MOVE COMES A WEEK AFTER A GIANT COMPOST PILE CAUGHT FIRE, DAMAGING TWO BUILDINGS... AND SENDING A FIREFIGHTER TO THE HOSPITAL.

FIRE CREWS SAY THE MOUND -- OF GRASS, LEAVES AND TREE BRANCHES, AT DIAMOND TREE EXPERTS -- WAS ABOUT 60 FEET DEEP, WHEN IT BURST INTO FLAMES.

SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION WAS ALSO BLAMED FOR ANOTHER FIRE -- AT THE SAME LOCATION -- A WEEK EARLIER.
