The largest donation -- in the history of Utah State University athletics -- is paving the way for construction of a new, $9.5-million sports facility, to be named after one of the Aggies' greatest basketball players, ever.

USU Athletic Director Scott Barnes announced this week, construction of the new "Wayne Estes Center" will begin later this month, thanks to a $5.25-million gift from Cache Valley Electric President Jim Laub, and his wife Carol.

Estes was an All-American athlete, who died in 1965, when he stopped -- at the scene of an accident, after a USU game -- and was electrocuted by a downed power line.

The new facility will be used primarily for basketball and volleyball.
